Rahul Gandhi staged a peaceful protest against Akashvani, in which he attacked the media's biased reporting. This move reignited the debate on media freedom and political balance.
Rahul Gandhi organized a peaceful protest at the Akashvani headquarters today at 10 a.m., expressing dissatisfaction with the government broadcasting policy. This move marks a new turn for the Indian National Congress leader, as he has previously demanded pressure on the media and its freedom. During the protest, Gandhi accused Akashvani’s programs of alleged bias and violations of editorial independence. He called more than 300 supporters to join him, who marched peacefully carrying flags and banners.
Akashvani, founded in 1936, is India’s oldest national radio network. Its coverage spans 98 percent of Indian states and it is known for playing a significant role in promoting government policies. In recent years, Akashvani has faced numerous criticisms, especially when accusations of a lack of balanced reporting in political programs have arisen.
During the protest, Rahul Gandhi wrote on a placard: “Right to media freedom, make Akashvani impartial.” He questioned the editorial decisions of Akashvani’s flagship program “Satya aur Satyata,” claiming that the show supports political sides in a biased manner. Gandhi said this step emphasizes the need for media transparency for Indian citizens.
A senior member of the Indian National Congress also issued a statement, saying, “All media platforms must provide fair and balanced reporting.” The party demanded immediate reforms from Akashvani and said the move aligns with democratic values.
Members of Parliament and government officials responded to the protest peacefully. They stated that Akashvani’s editorial policies are independent and free from any political interference. The government also proposed forming an independent committee to assess media balance and freedom.
The incident received extensive coverage from national and international media. In addition to live coverage of Akashvani’s programs, many discussions took place on social media. Journalists described the protest as “a pivotal moment for media freedom.”
The general public showed mixed reactions to the protest. Some praised Gandhi’s action and called for media transparency, while others viewed it as a political strategy. The hashtag #AkashvaniVirodh on social media garnered more than 1.2 million retweets and 800,000 likes.
Thus, Rahul Gandhi’s protest against Akashvani revived questions about media freedom and political balance, sparking a deep debate on the issue across the country.
