Rapid Expansion of 5G Network in India: Challenges and Future Opportunities

City News Mumbai•11 September 2026 at 04:06 am•0 views•2 min read

Rapid expansion of 5G networks in India is driving changes in health, manufacturing and agriculture; despite challenges, the government and the private sector are moving forward together.

India’s 5G network rollout has injected new energy into the national telecommunications sector since the beginning of 2023. Like leading countries worldwide, India has taken proactive steps to adopt 5G, enabling higher speeds, lower latency, and increased bandwidth. By this year, 5G services are available in 12 major cities, and plans for rural coverage are underway. The government aims to secure comprehensive 5G coverage by 2024, accelerating digital inclusion and economic growth for all users.

To date, active 5G usage in India has reached over 4.5 crore users, and 5G base stations have been installed in 50 cities. Mobile operators plan to install more than 10,000 5G nodes by the third quarter of 2024, with an estimated average download speed of 1.5 gigabits per second.

The Ministry of Communications allocated 5G spectrum under the 3.4‑GHz band in 2022, with a capacity of 5.5 gigabits per second, incentivizing telecom companies to invest in 5G infrastructure. Major operators Ericsson, Nokia, and Huawei began testing 5G networks with India in 2023, and the first commercial 5G service launched in 2024.

Fast 5G connectivity has revolutionized sectors such as healthcare, manufacturing, and agriculture. Telemedicine platforms now enable real‑time imaging and remote surgery via 5G, while automation and robotics in smart factories have increased efficiency by up to 30%. In agriculture, drones and sensors powered by 5G enable precise crop management, expected to boost yields by 15%.

However, many challenges remain in fully realizing 5G’s benefits. High costs slow the installation of base stations in rural areas, and shortages of power supply and backup further hinder deployment. Additionally, new cybersecurity vulnerabilities arise as the vast connectivity of 5G networks heightens the risk of data leaks. The government and private sector must collaborate to address these issues.

Looking ahead, the Indian government is encouraging research into 6G, targeting speeds of 10 gigabits per second by 2028. Lessons learned from 5G will inform 6G network design, enabling energy efficiency and AI‑driven autonomous services. Digital literacy programs continue to teach citizens how to use 5G services properly, further promoting digital inclusion.

Thus, the expansion of 5G will steer India’s digital future in a new direction, building a robust foundation for sustainable development while confronting existing challenges.
