Sheikh Abdul Wahab, who not only actively participated in the national movement under Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership but also faithfully discharged his duties as a public representative in independent India, was born in 1908 in Tenali, Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. His father’s name was Sheikh Farid and his mother’s name was Sheikh Imam B. He studied up to the S.S.L.C. level. Later he was drawn to the national movement because from childhood he harbored aspirations for freedom and self‑reliance. His wife Sheikh Chand B, when Mahatma Gandhi visited Tenali in 1929, donated all her gold ornaments to the national movement’s fund and earned praise as a woman equal to her husband in patriotism. When the Muslim League proposed partition of the country on religious grounds, Sheikh Wahab opposed it and maintained this opposition until the end of his life. He became a councilor of Tenali municipality in 1942.
