City News Mumbai / Gani Khan
On the occasion of Diwali, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has provided major relief to consumers with outstanding electricity bills. MSEDCL has launched the 'Abhay Yojana 2026-27'. Coming into effect from 6 November 2026, this scheme will continue till 15 January 2027. Under this, 100 percent interest and delayed payment charges on outstanding electricity bills will be waived. Meanwhile, eligible consumers making a lump-sum payment will also get up to a 20 percent discount on the principal outstanding amount.
Under the scheme, low-tension electricity consumers will get a discount ranging from 10 to 20 percent depending on the period of default. Consumers whose electricity supply has been disconnected for up to three years will be given a 10 percent discount, and those disconnected for more than three years will get a 20 percent discount. A provision of 10 to 15 percent discount is also available for other low-tension and high-tension consumers according to prescribed conditions. Relief has also been provided to consumers who are unable to make a lump-sum payment. Low-tension consumers can deposit a 50 percent down payment and pay the remaining amount in six equal interest-free installments. Meanwhile, high-tension consumers will get the facility to pay in three to six installments.
Additional benefit for those paying by 15 December
MSEDCL has announced an early bird rebate for consumers paying in the initial phase of the scheme. Those making a lump-sum payment by 15 December 2026 will get an additional discount. Apart from this, consumers up to 20 kW who opt for prepaid smart meters will be given an additional five percent discount on the principal outstanding amount.
Reconnection will also be provided
Under the scheme, the facility to immediately restore electricity supply will be provided on demand to consumers paying their dues. For this, the reconnection fee and the service connection fee for low-tension consumers will be completely waived. The benefits of the scheme can be availed online through MSEDCL's portal and mobile app.
Dues of Rs 7,650 crore
According to MSEDCL, total dues of Rs 7,650 crore are pending from 34 lakh 86 thousand consumers whose electricity supply was permanently disconnected till 31 March 2026. Out of this, Rs 2,092 crore will be waived as interest and delayed payment charges. Meanwhile, Rs 488.78 crore are due from 2 lakh 60 thousand 829 consumers whose electricity supply was temporarily disconnected till 31 December 2025, out of which interest of Rs 163.93 crore will be waived.
