2024 National Elections: A New Chapter in Coalition Politics

India's 2024 national election has taken a new turn in the political landscape. After voting on 15 March 2024, major parties recorded a victory with more than 55% of the votes. This result not only shows a clear majority but also indicates that voters are now prioritising policy‑based options over traditional party frameworks. During this election, the coalition that secured a majority in 220 out of 400 seats has been tasked with forming the new government. Independent candidates and small parties also performed notably, increasing political diversity.

During the election, 75% of the 1.1 crore eligible voters cast their ballots, which is 5 percentage points higher than in previous elections. This high turnout reflects a growing awareness of citizens' political engagement. The main issues were economic reforms, job creation and environmental policies, on which all major parties clarified their ideological stance.

The new coalition government, based on the principle of 'collective responsibility', formed a cabinet of 12 ministers to ensure balance among leading figures. The cabinet includes representatives from 8 major parties, with leaders of 5 parties appointed as ministers. This decision promotes political stability while encompassing diverse interests.

The new government announced a restructuring of economic policies in the next quarter, including a 5% tax cut and a grant of 200 million rupees for small industries. A commitment of 1.5 billion rupees for education and health was pledged, which will improve infrastructure quality in both rural and urban areas. Under environmental goals, a target of a 20% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 has been set.

Opposition parties questioned the government's policies, saying that tax cuts and grant schemes will only benefit the wealthy class. They also claimed that despite investments in education and health, a lack of facilities will persist in rural areas. The opposition called the government's decisions 'increasing economic inequality' and demanded major changes in the upcoming state elections.

The international community received the election result positively. The US embassy praised India's democratic processes, stating that the new government should focus on economic stability and social inclusion. China's foreign ministry pledged to deepen economic cooperation with India, while the European Union called for policy support to improve the investment climate.

Thus, the 2024 election has given India a new political direction and inspired a significant step toward inclusive development.
