A New Direction in Education Management in India: Challenges and Opportunities

Education management is the field that ensures the efficiency, resource allocation, and policy implementation of educational institutions. Operating more than 200,000 schools for over 1.5 crore students in India, the role of education management has become far more complex than before. According to the 2023 National Education Survey, only 56% of schools have digital infrastructure, while 78% of teachers feel the need for continuous training. In this context, the need for government and private sector to adopt innovative management models is clear.

In recent years, the Ministry of Education has launched the ‘e-School’ initiative under ‘Digital India’, providing tablets and internet connectivity to more than 50,000 schools. In addition, the ‘School Management Reform Plan’ released in 2024 allocated an additional 10% budget to increase financial transparency and accountability along with autonomy.

Nevertheless, many challenges remain. In rural areas, lack of infrastructure, teacher shortages and the student‑teacher ratio has reached 1:35, while in urban areas it is 1:25. Moreover, the lack of transparency in data management causes delays in decision‑making, affecting education quality.

The private sector has increased investment in education management, especially the use of management software and online learning platforms in private schools. According to 2023 data, 30% of private schools have adopted cloud‑based management systems, making resource allocation and student progress tracking more effective.

Teacher training programmes have also been revamped. Under the ‘Teacher Digital Skills Programme’, more than 15,000 teachers have been trained in digital tools and online teaching. This has not only improved teaching quality but also increased student participation.

In the future vision, education management will be empowered by data analytics, AI‑based assessment and blockchain‑based certificates. The government’s goal is to achieve 90% digital coverage in all schools and a 1:30 student‑teacher ratio by 2030.

Only through the coordination of these aspects can India’s education management be transformed into a sustainable and inclusive framework for the future.
