New emphasis on digital literacy in India's education policy with latest changes

India’s Ministry of Education today released a new curriculum framework for the 2024‑25 academic year, placing special emphasis on digital literacy and skill development. The plan aims to prepare students for the future workforce, covering programming, data analysis, and multilingual communication. Additionally, 1,200 new tablets and internet connections will be arranged to bridge the digital divide between rural and urban schools. The chief of the education department praised this step as a symbol of inclusive development in the education sector.

According to the latest figures from the Central Statistical Office, enrollment in primary education was 12.5 crore in 2023, rising to 12.8 crore in 2024, reflecting a 2.3 percent increase. This growth is largely credited to the free school meal scheme and academic support programmes.

A total of 350,000 teachers registered to participate in online training modules this year, emphasizing subject‑based teaching methods and the use of digital tools. During the training, teachers were given practical experience through interactive workshops and case studies.

Nevertheless, challenges such as a shortage of teachers and lack of infrastructure persist in rural areas. In particular, more than 10,000 villages lack adequate teaching facilities for students in classes 1 to 5.

The Ministry of Education has set a target to provide internet connectivity and digital teaching resources in all primary schools by 2030. Moreover, a national standard for measuring teaching quality will be established by 2026.
