Amit Shah: The Leading Face of Security and Administration in Indian Politics

Amit Shah, born 21 October 1964 in Mumbai, Gujarat, is a senior BJP leader and the current Home Minister, serving as the chief policymaker for national security and internal order. He served as Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2002 and, in 2014, took charge of the Home Ministry in the Narendra Modi government, implementing several key legislative initiatives. His political journey began in 1992 when he joined the BJP, after which he led numerous election campaigns and strengthened the party’s organizational framework. He is presently a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha representing the Ghaziabad constituency.

As Home Minister, Amit Shah launched several major initiatives to strengthen national security. In 2019, a draft of the National Registration Card (NRC) was prepared, and in 2020 he played a pivotal role in passing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Additionally, he tightened anti‑terrorism laws and prioritized digital security in the 2021 update of the National Information Technology Policy. These steps had a significant impact on modernizing the security apparatus.

In BJP election campaigns, Amit Shah’s strategic role is often referred to as “Shah’s strategy.” In the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he adopted new methods in candidate selection, voter outreach, and social media use. His teams in Ghaziabad, Ahmedabad, and Delhi ran campaigns based on extensive surveys and data analysis, leading the party to win 303 seats in 2019. This success earned him national recognition for his managerial skills.

Amit Shah’s political career has also seen several controversies. After the 2002 Gujarat riots, several legal actions were demanded against him, but in 2015 the High Court dismissed many cases filed against him. Critics claim that some of his decisions fueled social tensions, while supporters argue that he strengthened law and order. These debates have made his public image complex.

Currently, Amit Shah is actively preparing for the 2024 general elections, presenting security, economic development, and social inclusion as key issues. He recently announced a review of the National Security Policy and proposed a new plan for rural development. If the party succeeds in the upcoming elections, further comprehensive reforms in the Home Ministry under his leadership may remain possible.
