Mumbai, September 5, 2026 – The Municipal Corporation of Mumbai (BMC) has launched a 24‑hour waste collection pilot project in the Bandra area, taking a significant step towards addressing the city’s growing waste‑management challenge. The initiative aims to eliminate delays in waste disposal, reduce public‑health risks caused by litter, and provide better services to citizens. A senior BMC official stated that the pilot will collect 500 tonnes of waste daily in two shifts, achieving greater efficiency than the existing two‑shift system.

The primary reason behind the pilot project is the continual growth in Mumbai’s population and the resulting increase in waste production due to urbanisation. In 2025, BMC estimated that the city generates approximately 4,800 tonnes of waste per day, while the existing collection system is often overloaded. Bandra, known for its busy commercial and residential zones, was chosen as the first site for the pilot.

BMC has purchased new waste‑collection trucks for the scheme, equipped with GPS tracking and real‑time data‑monitoring systems. This will improve collection accuracy and reduce the likelihood of litter piles accumulating. Additionally, the municipal corporation has provided extra training to local sanitation workers so that they can work safely and effectively even at night.

Key benefits of the project include reduced flooding and waterborne diseases caused by waste accumulation, improved street cleanliness, and enhanced quality of life for citizens. BMC has stated that, based on the pilot’s results, the model could be expanded throughout the city.
