PWD tightens safety measures at construction sites in Kerala

Kerala's Public Works Department (PWD) has recently announced that it will tighten safety standards across all construction sites in the state. This step comes after several accidents amid rising construction activity in the state, involving worker injuries and, in some serious cases, fatalities. Under the new policies, all contractors will be required to complete mandatory safety training programs, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) on site will be compulsory. In addition, the PWD has formed a special inspection unit that will conduct intensive inspections at least twice a week at each site.

During safety inspections, any detected violations will result in an immediate fine imposed on the contractor, and in severe cases, construction work may be halted. The PWD also stated that it will collaborate with the state's Safety Department to develop a joint data platform that will enable real‑time tracking of accident statistics. Through this platform, reports on accident trends, causes, and remedial measures will be prepared, aiding policy decision‑making.

The purpose of these measures is to ensure worker safety and improve overall productivity of the construction industry. A PWD spokesperson said, “By prioritizing safety, we can not only save the lives of workers but also sustain the state’s economic progress.” Under this new initiative, a detailed schedule of inspection frequency and punitive measures will be released in the coming months so that all stakeholders can prepare in a timely manner.
