Rapid Technological Development in India: New Direction for 5G, AI, and Digital Infrastructure

City News Mumbai•11 September 2026 at 04:06 am•0 views•2 min read

India has made remarkable progress in the technology sector over the past two years, including the expansion of 5G networks, widespread adoption of AI, and new initiatives for digital infrastructure. This article presents a detailed analysis of these key trends.

In India, the technology sector has experienced rapid growth over the past two years, with artificial intelligence, 5G networks, and the expansion of the startup ecosystem taking center stage. In 2024, India increased 5G coverage to 75 percent, while AI-based solutions are being adopted across various industries. Under the Digital India initiative, the government established 1.2 crore new internet connections in 2023, resulting in a 30 percent increase in internet access in rural areas. These initiatives attracted investment and spurred improvements in digital skills.

In 2024, telecom companies expanded the 5G network by installing 20,000 new base stations, bringing the average download speed in urban areas up to 250 megabits per second. This speed enabled services such as automated manufacturing, remote healthcare, and high-definition streaming. Data from the Indian Telecom Association show that the number of active 5G users rose from 12 million in 2023 to 28 million in 2024. However, connectivity disparities remain, especially in the northeastern states.

Artificial intelligence contributed a 4.5 percent increase to India's industrial output in 2023, according to the National Statistical Office. In 2024, more than 30 percent of companies in the finance, health, and agriculture sectors adopted AI-based analytics tools. In 2023, the government established a fund of 2,500 crore rupees under the “AI India” initiative, stimulating the startup ecosystem. Forty percent of this fund was allocated to research and development, 35 percent to infrastructure, and the remaining 25 percent to training programs.

The Digital India program increased rural internet coverage to 45 percent in 2023 by establishing 1.2 crore new broadband connections. Under this initiative, high-speed internet was provided to 5,000 schools in 2024, improving student engagement in online education by 22 percent. However, affordable data prices and network stability remain challenges in rural areas. Private companies invested 3,500 crore rupees in 2024 to upgrade rural 4G networks, expecting stable high-speed connectivity in 60 percent of villages over the next two years.

Analysts believe that by 2025, India's total digital economy could reach $1 trillion if technological investment and policy support continue at the current pace. The government has allocated an additional 10,000 crore rupees for the 2025 “Smart City” plan, which will accelerate IoT and data center development in urban areas. Private sector investors have also pledged 1,200 crore rupees toward AI, cybersecurity, and quantum computing. Coordinated implementation of these efforts will strengthen India’s position on the global technology stage.
