Maulana Syed Hussain Ahmed's native place was Aldadpur Tanda (Faizabad), but he was born on 6 October 1879 in Bangarmau town of Unnao district, because at that time your father was a teacher in the Madrasa there. After primary education, at the age of 12, he went to Darul Uloom (Deoband) where he received education in knowledge and jurisprudence under the tutelage of Sheikh-ul-Hind. After that, he remained under the tutelage of Maulana Rashid Ahmed Gangohvi and also pledged allegiance to him.
After graduating from Darul Uloom (Deoband), he went to Medina with his family where he continued imparting Islamic education for 18 years. When Sheikh-ul-Hind was arrested, you also went with him to Malta to serve him without being punished. Sheikh-ul-Hind Saheb died soon after returning to India from there. Then you came forward to fulfill their mission of freedom struggle. The Khilafat Conference was held in Karachi in July 1921, which was presided over by Maulana Mohammad Ali Johar. Through one of your resolutions in that meeting, working in the police and army of the British government was declared haraam for Muslims. Maulana Dr. Kitchlew, Maulana Nisar Ahmed and Maulana Shaukat Ali spoke in support of this proposal, after which Jagatguru Shankaracharya, in his speech in English, called it a big step and supported it. After passing it, it was given the importance of a fatwa.
The government imposed a law against this action and confiscated it and everyone was arrested and taken to Karachi jail. After being released from jail, you strengthened Jamaat-Ulama-e-Hind under your leadership and made it play an important role and a prominent part in Tehreek-Azaadi, in which Muslims became united and did not lag behind anyone on every aspect of the movement. All the nationalistic scholars of the country started appearing on the battlefield with their strength and advice. During the movement, a large number of Ulama went to jail along with Hussain Ahmed Madani. You were against the two-nation theory – you even went to Uttar Pradesh after the partition decision. And a large number of people in Bihar were stopped from going to Pakistan.
The effect of this movement was that Muslim majority rule was established in five out of eleven provinces. In April 1944, the Jamaat-Ulama called a conference in Bachhraun, in which the focus was on forming a movement to fight the British. You were also supposed to participate in this, but before that a warrant for your arrest was issued. But without your acceptance among the people, the British officers could not arrest you. On June 24, 1945, when you were going to Punjab by train, after leaving Deoband station, when the train reached Tilhari station, you were arrested from the train compartment there and you were sent to Moradabad jail, from where you were transferred to Nainital jail. Maulana Mohammad Fakir Allahabadi, Maulana Abdul Hai Abdul Majeed, Maulana Abdul Qayyum Lucknowi and Maulana Abdul Bari Abbasi Gorakhpuri were already imprisoned in Nainital jail. Most of these people were released after the country became independent.
After his release, he continued devoting his time to educational work in Darul Uloom and died on 5 December 1957.
Note: The Government of India issued a commemorative postage stamp in 2012 in honor of Maulana Syed Hussain Ahmed Madani Rah.
