Swatantra Bhardwaj Arrested by Delhi Police After CJP Protest

City News Mumbai•4 September 2026 at 04:15 pm•2 views•2 min read

New Delhi, September 4, 2026 (City News Mumbai)

Delhi Police have reportedly taken Swatantra Bhardwaj into custody from Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, following a protest by the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) in Delhi.

According to the report, CJP activists had earlier surrounded the Parliament Street Police Station, demanding action against Bhardwaj. The protesters had reportedly given the police a deadline of 72 hours for his arrest.

Bhardwaj was accused of allegedly assaulting Sanjay Kumar, the father of student activist Nishu Azad, during a CJP demonstration at Jantar Mantar in July. It was alleged that Kumar suffered serious head injuries and required around 60 stitches.

The issue gained further attention after a video interview involving Bhardwaj reportedly circulated widely on social media. CJP supporters and Dalit activists subsequently intensified their protest, alleging that Bhardwaj had used caste-related remarks and had not faced appropriate action.

The protest included CJP co-conveners Saurabh Das and Ayushesh Shukla, along with Azad Samaj Party chief and MP Chandrashekhar Azad.

Following the protests, Delhi Police reportedly traced Bhardwaj to Bulandshahr and took him into custody. He has reportedly been brought to Delhi, where police questioning is underway.

The arrest came after sustained demands from CJP and other activists for Delhi Police to take action in the matter.
