Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has taken digital transactions in India to a new level.

City News Mumbai•18 September 2026 at 05:17 am•0 views•3 min read

UPI has accelerated and secured digital payments in India, handling 9.8 billion transactions and an amount of 13.5 trillion rupees in 2023‑24. The article presents a detailed analysis of UPI’s history, latest features, security measures, and future plans.

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has rapidly transformed India's digital payments landscape, enabling consumers, merchants and financial institutions to transact seamlessly on a single platform. Launched in 2016 by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI simplified real‑time transfers by integrating various mobile applications, banks and payment service providers. In this article we will provide a detailed analysis of UPI's evolution, current usage scenario, new features, security measures and future prospects. Both the government and the private sector have praised the role of this system in promoting financial inclusion, and by 2024 a 30 percent increase in average daily transaction value has been recorded.

UPI was developed by the National Payments Corporation of India to facilitate instant fund transfers between Indian banks. In the initial version transactions were possible only through a VPA (Virtual Payment Address), while QR‑code based payments were added in 2018. This infrastructure provided banks with API‑based interfaces, allowing third‑party apps to integrate payment services without additional charges.

According to Nipun Data, in the financial year 2023‑24 a total of 9.8 billion transactions were conducted via UPI, which is 45 percent higher than the previous year. The average daily transaction count rose to 38 million, while the total transfer amount reached 13.5 trillion rupees. Major banks such as HDFC, ICICI and Citibank, along with smaller cooperative banks, also adopted the platform, leading to a notable improvement in digital payment reach in rural areas.

In 2023 UPI 2.0 was implemented, featuring multi‑interface requests, decreased transaction limits and a consumer‑friendly interface. UPI AutoPay enabled automatic payments for subscription‑based services, while UPI‑QR code facilitated fast payments in offline retail. Additionally, UPI‑enabled insurance policies and government subsidy disbursements turned the payment system into a tool for social security.

From a security perspective NPCI has strengthened two‑factor authentication, encryption and a real‑time fraud monitoring system. A 6‑digit OTP or biometric verification is mandatory for each transaction, and AI‑based algorithms have been deployed to detect suspicious activities. As a result, reports of UPI‑based fraud fell by 12 percent in 2023, boosting user confidence.

Nevertheless, digital divide, uneven internet coverage and lack of user education remain key challenges. Because smartphone penetration is limited in rural areas, transaction rates are 30 percent lower than the national average. Moreover, new fraud techniques such as phishing and SIM‑swap have highlighted the need for continuous updates to security measures.

The Government of India has announced a plan to make all public services UPI‑based by 2025, and is working towards integration with the new digital identity (DigiLocker). Internationally, discussions are underway about adopting UPI in several countries, which will enhance the global competitiveness of the Indian payment system. With these initiatives, UPI will not only strengthen domestic transactions but also position India as a leader in the digital economy.
