Youth Sports: The Key to a Healthy Future

City News Mumbai•4 September 2026 at 05:20 am•0 views•2 min read

The growing trend of sports activities among youth in India is strengthening health, education, and social harmony. This article highlights the social, economic, and personal benefits of sports.

The growing trend of sports activities among the youth in India has had a profound impact on health, education, and social harmony. With increased participation of young people at national and international levels, sports have gained a new identity. Through sports, physical fitness, mental health, and the spirit of teamwork are promoted. Programs organized by the government and non‑governmental organizations have accelerated this transformation. In this article we will analyze the social, economic, and personal benefits of sports.

As a reference, the National Sports Policy 2023 has expanded sports facilities for youth and allocated a budget of ₹150 million for training programs. Additionally, under the “Kishor Sports Initiative,” fitness programs have been launched in 10,000 schools. According to the 2022 National Sports Survey, 68 % of youths aged 18‑25 have participated in some sport, while 32 % do not play sports regularly.

From a physical health perspective, the rate of obesity among youths who participate in sports is 15 % lower, whereas it is 38 % among inactive youths. In the realm of mental health, research shows that regular sports activities can reduce stress, depression, and anxiety by up to 25 %. Moreover, team‑based sports clearly foster social skills, leadership, and empathy.

Economically, the sports industry recorded a 12 % annual growth in 2023‑24, with revenue increasing from scouting, training, and competition fees for young talent. Many young entrepreneurs have launched sports‑related start‑ups, such as fitness apps, nutrition consulting, and e‑sports platforms.

A major challenge is the uneven availability of sports facilities, especially in rural areas and among disadvantaged groups. Under the government’s plan, the “All to Sports” program intends to establish 5,000 new gyms and sports fields. Efforts are also underway to integrate sports education into the curriculum so that students receive a balanced experience of academic and physical development.

In conclusion, sports are not merely physical activity but a means of holistic development. Active participation in sports among youth can bring positive change in health, education, social harmony, and economic prosperity. It is essential for the government, educational institutions, and society to work together to promote sports, so that future generations can build a healthy, prosperous, and inclusive society.
