Fadnavis government grants traders a one‑year “transition” relief; the law remains in force, and compliance with regulations becomes mandatory once the deadline expires.

Mumbai, 01 (City News Mumbai Anant Nalavde) — The state government has granted a major relief to traditional edible‑oil traders who were troubled by the strict enforcement of the law by FDA Commissioner Tukaram Munde on the sale of open edible oil.

However, the ban imposed on the sale of open edible oil in 2011 has not been revoked. For the time being, the strict enforcement has been suspended for one year, giving traders a transition period to make changes in compliance with the law.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced this decision after a meeting in the ministry. He clarified that after one year compliance with the rules will become mandatory, and there will be no possibility of further extensions.

The government’s decision appears to balance the traders’ problems with the needs of rural customers, employment dependent on traditional businesses, and the potential impact on citizens’ health from adulterated edible oil.

**Law remains, only one year of relief on enforcement**

To comply with the regulations related to the sale of open edible oil, traders will now have one year to make necessary changes and adopt a system in line with the law.

Chief Minister Fadnavis has clarified that no further extensions will be granted after this period. Therefore, this decision is considered a transition period to bring traders into the regulatory framework without giving them a sudden shock, rather than permanently relaxing the rules.

**New challenge for FDA as well**

After this decision, the role of the Food and Drug Administration will also become significant. Understanding traders’ problems, the FDA will be responsible for providing practical options to help them comply with the law.

To this end, two committees will be formed. The first committee will study the problems of traders who operate traditionally and suggest measures for changes in line with the law. The second committee will suggest ways to provide necessary facilities to vendors, producers, repackagers, and other stakeholders.

Both committees are instructed to submit their reports to the government within a month.

**2,103 licensed traders in the state**

The meeting provided information that there are currently 2,103 licensed traders involved in the open edible‑oil business in the state. Of these, 370 traders hold licenses to sell edible oil after repackaging, while 489 traders hold licenses for edible oil production.

This shows that the issue is not limited to a few small shopkeepers, but involves the entire edible‑oil chain — producers, sellers, repackers, and customers.

**Adulteration versus traditional business challenge**

The primary purpose of enforcing regulation on the sale of open edible oil is to prevent adulteration in edible oil and its…
