Election Commission: Role in Ensuring Transparency and Fairness of the 2024 National Elections

India's democracy depends on the Election Commission, which is responsible for free, fair and transparent elections. Established by the Constitution in 1950, this body has shaped the country's politics ever since. During the 2024 national elections, the Commission implemented a digital registration system and registered more than 1.2 crore new voters. Through VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Printed Audit Trail), voters can confirm their choice, reducing allegations of fraud. Additionally, the Commission launched the mobile app “Election Track”, which provides voters with real-time information on the status of their ballot and election events.

The Election Commission has to contend with political interference, misinformation, and security threats. In 2023, the spread of false claims on social media during election campaigning increased confusion among voters. Moreover, incidents of violence and intimidation at polling stations also rose, prompting the Commission to intensify election monitoring in collaboration with security forces. The Commission states that despite transparent procedures, continuous improvement is necessary to earn citizens' trust.

For upcoming elections, the Election Commission plans to incorporate artificial intelligence and blockchain technology to improve voter identity verification and ballot traceability. It has also pledged to promote civic education programmes so that young and rural voters can better understand electoral processes. After 2024, the Commission's goal is to make all voter registration and voting experiences digital and secure, thereby strengthening and further enhancing the transparency of India's democracy.
