Narendra Modi: Analysis of the Indian Prime Minister's political journey and policies

City News Mumbai•19 September 2026 at 04:46 am•0 views•2 min read

A brief summary of Narendra Modi's biography, his major tenure, economic and foreign policy initiatives, and the challenges faced has been presented.

Narendra Modi was born on 17 September 1950 in Vadnagar, Gujarat. Rising from a modest family, he secured a significant position in national politics. He served as the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014 and became the Prime Minister of India in May 2014. The consecutive victories in 2019 made him the longest‑serving leader in power in India.

As Chief Minister of Gujarat, Modi implemented numerous reforms to promote infrastructure, energy supply, and foreign direct investment (FDI). He played a crucial role in restoring the state's social peace after 2002 and accelerated economic development.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 282 seats under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), while Modi’s vote share was 31.34%. This victory was regarded as one of the largest majorities in India’s history and gave Modi a strong executive mandate.

While serving as Prime Minister, Modi launched several national initiatives, such as the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (2 October 2014), Digital India (July 2015), Goods and Services Tax (GST) (1 July 2017) and Ayushman Bharat (September 2018). These programmes aimed to expand public health, digital literacy, tax reform and health insurance.

In the realm of foreign policy, Modi focused on strengthening ties with neighboring countries under the “Neighbourhood First” principle. He visited the United States in 2020 and maintained diplomatic dialogue during border tensions with China, thereby reinforcing India’s position on the international stage.

According to economic data, India’s annual average GDP growth from 2014 to 2022 was 6.5%, while the unemployment rate reached 7.2% in 2020. The fiscal deficit in the financial year 2022 was 6.4%, remaining high despite several corrective measures.

However, the Modi government faced several challenges. The farmer protests against agricultural laws in 2020‑2021 sparked widespread national dissent. Additionally, criticisms emerged regarding media freedom and civil liberties, intensifying debate over democratic processes.

Narendra Modi’s leadership style, policy‑making and international diplomacy have had a profound impact on Indian politics. The upcoming 2024 general election will test his popularity and policies, determining the direction of India’s future.
