Playing with health under the banner of food…? FDA’s “smash” in three months…!

No more "paper checks" in the name of food safety, but a warning of direct regulatory action......

Mumbai, 11th (Anant Nalavde)- A shocking mirror of how safe the food is on the plates of the citizens of the state including Mumbai has officially come out on Friday through a three-month operation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). As many as 12 thousand 83 inspections were conducted across the state from June to August 2026. Out of this, 5,269 improvement notices, 603 licenses were suspended, and food stocks worth around Rs 67.20 crore were seized. The administration has also informed that 875 persons have been arrested.

The administration also focused on hotels, restaurants, dhabas and similar establishments. Out of 1,803 inspections in this sector, 948 improvement notices and 199 licenses were suspended. That is, the statistics show that violations are found at every stage of inspection.

Now where exactly is the danger on the plate.......?

The FDA's inspection found critical issues such as lack of clean water and proper drainage, cold chain violations, improper temperature maintenance in refrigerators, cockroach infestations, unsanitary practices by food handlers, deficiencies in employee medical examinations and training, unsanitary structures, and risk of cross-contamination between raw and prepared foods, the file said.
The administration has clarified that errors such as keeping raw chicken in open containers, improper storage of chopped vegetables, lack of drinking water inspection records, unsanitary floors and faulty drainage, dislodged plaster on walls, unsanitary utensils and food residues were also observed.
More stringent restrictions on prohibited substances
Production, sale, distribution and transportation of panmasala, gutkha, aromatic tobacco and similar prohibited food items were banned on July 13, 2026, the file said. Between June and August, 644 FIRs, 867 arrests and 110 vehicles were seized in these cases. A stock of prohibited items worth ₹ 19.62 crore was also seized. In particular, ₹ 5.40 crore was seized in milk and milk products, while ₹ 42.17 crore was seized in other food items.

In the division wise statistics, Pune division had the highest number of inspections at 4,261. There were 1,321 improvement notices, 168 license suspensions and ₹11.44 crore of stock impounded. Konkan division alone saw 3,142 inspections, 975 notices, 108 license suspensions and ₹14.68 crore of impounded stock. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division recorded stock impoundment of ₹16.01 crore.

Will the "burst" of action continue now.......?

These three-month statistics paint a picture of a major regulatory drive by the administration. However, the next important question is whether the situation has improved permanently after the inspection and action. 5,269 rectification notices and suspension of 603 licenses show the extent of the action; But the real success of this campaign will depend on how effective the follow-up inspections, compliance and continuous monitoring are to ensure that violations do not reoccur. Especially in the hotel-restaurant sector, errors in basic aspects such as cleanliness, cold chain, staff training and separation of raw-cooked food are not limited to a single establishment and highlight the challenge facing the implementation of a food safety system.

Now this statistic is also important politically. Because this question is directly related to the health of the citizens and food security is a sensitive issue, it is not enough for the government to just "take action"...; So whether it is fair, consistent and equal at all levels is going to be an important question. Especially in the coming days, this campaign will gain credibility only if the administration enforces the rules equally from large commercial establishments to small food vendors.

1. For Hotel-Restaurant Business:
With 1,803 inspections, 948 improvement notices and 199 license suspensions, regulatory pressure on the food industry will increase.

If the food‑security actions remain consistent, transparent, and non‑discriminatory, the government’s regulatory image can be strengthened....; however, if there is no consistency in the actions, even such large figures can raise questions.

However, the biggest “hit” in the file is...

₹67.20 crore of stock was seized, but the real question for citizens is not “how much was seized”... but “what will be done next to ensure that unsafe food never reaches the market”... Because today the real test for the FDA is to demonstrate results beyond numbers in the fight for genuine food safety, and that is indeed the case!
