Computers have fundamentally transformed the information technology landscape over the past seven decades, profoundly altering personal, business, and governmental operations. In contemporary India, nearly every educational institution, small‑to‑medium enterprise, and large multinational corporation relies on computing devices. This article presents a detailed analysis of the current state of the computer industry, key statistics, government policies, and future technological trends, providing readers with accurate and neutral information. Efforts to enhance computing power are rapidly advancing in both the private and public sectors, accompanied by significant investment.

The history of computers begins with the first electronic computing machine, ENIAC, in the 1940s, which weighed 30 tons and contained 5,000 tubes, capable of performing a calculation in 30 seconds. In 1971, Intel introduced the 4004 microprocessor, making personal computing possible, leading to the first desktop machines such as the Apple I in 1975 and the IBM PC in 1981. Over these decades, the continuous decline in hardware costs and the multifunctionality of software brought computers to the masses.

The Indian computer market recorded sales of 12.4 million units in 2023, a 5.2 % increase over the previous year. According to industry associations, total revenue during this period reached approximately 1.8 lakh crore rupees, with the laptop, desktop, and server segments sharing equal market share. The enterprise sector exhibited the fastest growth, with a 9.1 % CAGR driven by rising demand for cloud‑based solutions, while the education sector saw a 12 % increase in tablet demand due to remote learning.

Under the Digital India Mission, a target was set in 2024 to provide computers to 250 million schools, aiming to reduce the technology gap between rural and urban areas. As part of this plan, each school will be equipped with computing labs averaging 30 units, and curricula focused on coding and cybersecurity are being developed. Additionally, the government has issued national regulations for e‑waste management, aiming to increase the recycling of used devices to 70 % by 2025.

Currently, AI‑driven computing platforms, quantum processors, and edge computing solutions are being rapidly adopted in India. A national quantum laboratory established in mid‑2024 successfully tested its first prototype quantum chip, opening new possibilities for research and development. Moreover, the spread of 5G networks has enabled real‑time data processing, strengthening computing infrastructure for autonomous vehicles, smart cities, and industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).

With the rapid increase in computer usage, several challenges have emerged, including the growing burden of e‑waste, a shortage of skilled IT professionals, and cybersecurity risks. It is estimated that by 2025, India will generate approximately 1.2 million tonnes of electronic waste annually, necessitating an effective recycling system. Additionally, the number of data breaches and ransomware attacks rose by 18 % annually in 2023‑2024, compelling private and public institutions to increase security investments.

Development experts predict that by 2030, the global total number of personal computers will reach 2.5 billion units, with the Asia‑Pacific region holding 45 % of the share. In India, the annual computer sales CAGR is expected to remain at 6 %, potentially introducing around 18 million new units into the market over the next decade. Alongside this trend, the adoption of advanced technologies such as cloud‑native applications, mixed reality (MR), and automated code generation will become commonplace, significantly enhancing productivity and innovation.
