Mumbai – Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis held a detailed discussion with a delegation of students preparing for a MPSC‑related protest on Wednesday.
The meeting saw the government respond positively to the students’ various demands, announcing the simultaneous declaration of three‑year vacancies and giving firm assurance of a record increase in Group C recruitment. It also decided on the immediate replacement of the MPSC secretary. Following this discussion, the students announced a temporary suspension of their 2 October protest.
**Judicial inquiry into the Chairman and members within three months**
The MPSC Chairman is a constitutional post, so the state government or the governor does not have the authority to remove him. This was clarified at the conference. Students demanded action against former and current chairmen and members under Article 317 of the Constitution. The government assured that a judicial inquiry would be conducted within three months, so that further action could be taken based on its findings.
**Immediate replacement of the secretary**
A major demand of the students was the replacement of the MPSC secretary, and the government has taken immediate action on that. This shows that the government has taken note of the students’ concerns regarding the administrative functioning of the commission.
**Exam methodology – offline only**
The government clarified that MPSC exams will be conducted offline. Any changes to the exam methodology will not be made without discussion with students and all relevant parties.
The meeting also mentioned that the state government has about 30 to 40 thousand pending promotion positions, and recruitment rules have not been adequately revised since 1960.
