Every year, on the eve of Maharashtra Day, 1 May, the Chief Minister’s Shaurya Medals will be announced. The honor will consist of the Shaurya Medal, cash of fifty thousand rupees, and a citation. Gadchiroli and Gondia in Maharashtra are districts affected by Maoism. Officers and staff of the Maharashtra police force bravely and valiantly shoulder the responsibility of safeguarding internal security and defending against external attacks, including Maoism, terrorism, communal riots, organized crime, and smuggling. To honor the bravery of police officers and constables, the Union Home Ministry announces each year various awards such as Shaurya, President’s Shaurya, Ashok Chakra, and Kirti Chakra on 26 January and 15 August.
In Indian states such as West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Kerala, awards are conferred in recognition of outstanding police performance and dedicated service. On the same basis, the Chief Minister’s Shaurya Medal will be awarded in Maharashtra. For the selection of this award, a primary selection committee will be constituted under the chairmanship of the State Police Director General. From the district level, the Superintendent of Police will forward proposals through the Special Police Inspector General of the concerned zone, while the Police Commissioner will submit proposals to the Director General of Police. At the government level, a committee chaired by the Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department will be formed. These proposals will then be presented to the Home Minister and the Chief Minister. Provision has also been made to confer the Chief Minister’s Shaurya Medal posthumously. In the cabinet meeting, approval was given for the selection procedure for the Chief Minister’s Shaurya Medal, its committee composition, and the allocation of ancillary expenses.
